AVIF comes out of the AV1 video codec. On a photograph, converting a PNG to AVIF commonly produces a file 20 to 30% smaller than a WebP of equivalent quality, and far smaller than the PNG itself.
Encoding is slower than WebP — that is the price of the compression. Expect a few hundred milliseconds per image, which stays unnoticeable on a small batch.
Transparency is preserved. If your visitors use older browsers, plan a WebP fallback with the “picture” tag.
